LG&E and KU FAQ
LG&E and KU’s program is a voluntary program for qualifying LG&E and KU residential electric and small business customers who have eligible smart thermostats connected to their central air conditioning.
As one example, when summer temperatures climb, demand for electricity increases and can cause strain on the grid. LG&E and KU’s Bring Your Own Thermostat program is designed to help reduce energy use during times of high energy demand. This decreases the use of less efficient and more expensive power sources. That’s good for the environment, and it helps keep energy costs low for everyone.
Participants agree to brief adjustments of 4 degrees or less to their thermostats during times of extreme temperatures and similar critical need. Adjustments to your thermostat typically last no more than four hours.
Participants will receive a $50 incentive after successfully enrolling in the program. In addition, participants will receive a $5 incentive at the end of each program season for every thermostat adjustment event each device participates* in. *Participation in an event is defined as the thermostat being controlled for at least 70% of the event minutes.
Heating season is November through March. Cooling season is April through October.
To be eligible to enroll, you must:
Be an LG&E and KU residential or qualifying small business electric customer and the either have electric service in your name or associated with the electric utility account.
Use an eligible internet-connected smart thermostat
Allow LG&E and KU to make brief, small thermostat adjustments on days of high energy demand
Not be enrolled in the LG&E and KU Residential and Small Business Demand Conservation program, also known as DLC.
The Demand Conservation and Bring Your Own Thermostat programs both interact with your heating and cooling system so you can only be enrolled in one at a time.
If you are enrolled in Demand Conservation and wish to switch to the Bring Your Own Thermostat program, you’ll first need to unenroll from Demand Conservation. You can do that by 1) logging into MyAccount, selecting Demand Conservation with the Programs and Tools box, and submitting the unenrollment request, or 2) contacting LG&E at 502-589-1444 or KU at 800-981-0600 and using fast path 1-2-4-5. Please allow 10 business days before re-enrolling in BYOT.
You will receive a $50 incentive after successfully enrolling in the program. You can enroll more than one thermostat; however, you will only receive one $50 enrollment incentive in total. Customers that enroll in the program will have an opportunity to select their incentive payment method in the LG&E and KU Rebate Center. You will be able to choose from an electronic check that will be sent to your email address, or physical check mailed to your home.
Your enrollment incentive will be added to your incentive balance within a few days after acceptance in the program. You can request your incentive balance be paid to you at any time. Otherwise, you will be paid out your incentive balance each time it reaches $100. Please allow 1 week to receive your incentive if you selected PayPal, Venmo, or e-check, and 2 weeks if you selected physical check.
You will receive $5 for every thermostat adjustment event you participate in. Participation in an event is defined as the thermostat being controlled for at least 70% of the event minutes.
The incentive you earn for participating in events will be added to your incentive balance after each event season ends. You can request your incentive balance be paid to you at any time. Otherwise, you will be paid out your incentive balance each time it reaches $100.
